Nurse Practitioner students Laura Mays and Sarah Whalen provided women's healthcare to patients at the Remote Area Medical Clinic (RAMUSA.org) in Grundy, VA on Oct 7, 2017. They were accompanied by NP faculty, Dr. Judy Branscom Jenks in her continuing community outreach endeavors in rural Appalachia.
The students arrived at 6 a.m. to a clinic already full of patients who had spent the night in the parking lot and then lined up at 4 a.m. for a chance to receive medical care. The RAM provided over $116,000 in services to 702 patients at the clinic. The Nurse Practitioner students gained valuable medical experience and insight into the health needs of the rural population.
