On Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, JCHS sponsored "Jefferson College of Health Sciences Night at BB&T's Party in the Park."
The event is held every Thursday night throughout the summer in Elmwood Park, just across the street from the JCHS campus at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.
Our Office of Admissions and Department of Student Affairs shared a table at the vent to provide attendees with more information about JCHS.
Nearby, JCHS President Dr. Nathaniel L. Bishop greeted our students as they arrived.
In our Admissions/Student Affairs tent, everybody stopped for a quick snapshot, including (left to right) Jennifer Slusher, Director of Counseling & Wellness; Elizabeth Costa, Coordinator of Student Affairs; Sarah Higginbotham, Coordinator of the VOICE Program; Scott Hill, Dean for Student Affairs; Sarah Ross, Assistant Director of Admissions; Asthon Downs, Admissions Counselor; and President Bishop. Attached to Jennifer's leg is Livie, who you'll more about later in this slideshow.
Behind the Admissions/Student Affairs tent, we had a VIP tent for our special guests.
Among those special guests were many of the Jefferson College of Health Sciences Board of Directors, including Mr. William Reid (second from left). In 1982, when the modern iteration of the College was founded, Mr. Reid was serving as the President and Administrator of Community Hospital, and oversaw the College as Chairman for its first few years.
It wasn't long before the College's mascot, Jeff the Blue Healer arrived with his lovely assistant!
Dr. Lisa Allison-Jones, JCHS Dean for Academic Affairs, was the first to grab Jeff for a portrait.
Jeff was a very popular figure at Party in the Park, even giving out high fives in celebration of the event.
Many of our students brought their own photographers to snap a picture with Jeff.
As the afternoon progressed, the park filled up quickly with a capacity crowd of hundreds of people.
On stage, the band Jim Quick and Coastline entertained the crowd.
Near the stage, JCHS students (left to right) Erica Balita, Kelly Price, Ashlee Paxton and Ally Thompson enjoyed the festivities.
Jeff posed with a number of our students. Of course, after every pic, he got a doggie bone, so he had incentive!
JCHS President Bishop welcomes Dan and Gil Harrington, longtime friends and supporters of the College.
More of our students smiling broadly as they pose with Jeff.
We even had really big groups of students pose with Jeff. And all he asked for was a scratch behind the ear and a pat on the head!
In the VIP tent, Mr. William Reid chats with Dr. Wayne Gandee, Chief Medical Officer at Carilion Clinic.
Right outside of the tent, Jeff happily continued his modeling career!
We were honored that many members of the JCHS Board of Directors came out for JCHS Night at Party in the Park, including Ms. Ellen Wade (left), the Board's Vice-Chair.
JCHS Dean for Student Affairs Scott Hill peeks out from under the tent as he talks with Bruce Jones, husband of JCHS Dean for Academic Affairs Lisa Allison-Jones.
Scott Hill (right) and JCHS Assistant Director of Admissions Sarah Ross (far left) listen as some of our newest students tell them about their first week at the College.
JCHS Director of Admissions Judith McKeon chats with De-Dee Foti, Associate Director of the JCHS Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.
After a quick break for a bowl of cool water, Jeff jumped right back into his portraits with our students!
After an Alumni Association event at The Patrick Henry Building across Jefferson Street, we were joined by Ally Bowersock (left), Director of the Health & Exercise Science Program, and Karen Layman, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator and Instructor with the Occupational Therapy Program.
Dr. Lisa Allison-Jones shares a laugh with Mr. Stephen A. Musselwhite, the Chair of the JCHS Board of Directors.
As he continued taking pictures with students, Jeff considered briefly a move to Paris for a career in canine modeling, but soon rejected the idea because he's miss JCHS too much.
President Bishop talks with Mr. Ed Kitas, President and CEO of the Kitas & Lutsko Family Foundation. Mr. Kitas has funded the Kitas and Lutsko Family Foundation Scholarship at JCHS for the last five years. The scholarship has been vital in providing our students with continual and important financial support.
After working late in her office, Jeannie Garber, Assistant Professor in the JCHS Nursing Program, brought her daughter for some fun in the park.
Emily Moore (right), Coordinator of the JCHS Learning & Writing Center, shoots the breeze with Susan Booth, JCHS Safety and Physical Plant Officer.
We were joined by another friend and supporter of the College, Pearl Fu (right). Director of Admissions Judith McKeon greets Ms. Fu.
Back under the Admissions/Student Affairs tent, we got this lovely shot of Sarah Ross and Ashton Downs.
President Bishop greets Terri Workman (left), Principal Business Officer for the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Sarah Higginbotham, Coordinator of the JCHS VOICE (Violence Can End) Program, greets prospective students with a smile.
JCHS Alumni Association President Sue Campbell, '00, signs up for the inaugural "JCHS 5K Riverside Run & Wellness Walk." Have you signed up yet? You can learn more and sign up online TODAY at: http://www.jchs5k.com.
Susan Booth and Ashton Downs pose prettily for the camera.
This is Livie, daughter of JCHS Director of Counseling & Wellness Jennifer Slusher. She is intently eating a french fry. Drama to come in the next few slides...
Livie became very interested in Jeff the Blue Healer, but was also very unsure about this six-foot dog on two legs. Here, she peeks around her mom to catch a glimpse.
Jennifer asked Livie if she wanted to go meet Jeff more than a few times, even urging her to do so, but Livie was wary of this huge canine and kept her distance.
Jennifer even went over to Jeff herself and gave him a big belly rub to show Livie that he was a really good boy. But, Livie was having none of it and the meeting never happened. Oh well... maybe at our next big event...
As Jeff headed back to campus so he could curl up and take a nap, he stopped to greet some more kids along the way.
JCHS Night at Party in the Park was huge success and we want to thank everyone who came out to be with us! A great time was had by all!
