Jefferson College MSN students from the Nursing Administration and Family Nurse Practitioner tracks headed to Richmond on February 6, 2018 to advocate for bills being considered in the legislature that improve healthcare. They lobbied their legislators to support the Nurse Practitioner bill to lower barriers to practice and then attended the committee meeting to see the vote where it (HB 793) passed. Later in the day, Mark Lawrence, Carilion's Vice President for Governmental Affairs, gave a legislative primer before students gathered to watch the full House of Delegates in session. Students will continue to lobby for the passage of HB793 as it makes it way for a full vote in the House of Delegates and possibly the Senate later in the legislative session. The students learned how effective they can be when they inform their legislators about important health issues that improve healthcare for all citizens.
